Last Sunday we saw the premiere of Season 17 on The Amazing Race! For those of you who missed it, or want to check it out again, welcome to The Amazing Race DeanBlog!
Our host, Phil Keoghan met up with the latest eleven pairs of teams vying for a million dollars, this time on the grass mall of Castle Hill in Ipswich, Massachusetts:
So the new element this cycle is the Express Pass. The first team to finish the initial leg gets it and has the opportunity to skip a task they don’t want to do! The teams have hit the road and are on their way to Logan Airport. Even though we’re still in the States, chaos ensues:
The first three teams to book in at the airport get an earlier flight! And they are best friends Ron and Tony, dating couple Jill and Thomas and newly dating Chad and Stephanie. The rest of the teams piled into the second flight.
Flight #1 arrived in London at 6:57 am. Jill and Thomas were first out of the parking garage, followed by Ron and Tony, and Chad and Stephanie brought up the rear, all heading to Stonehenge!
Flight #2 landed at 7:18 am, giving the frontrunners a twenty-one minute advantage. Now in fourth place, home shopping hosts Brook and Claire; doctors Nat and Kat are fifth; daters Nick and Vicki sixth. Rounding out the bottom 5 pairs are beach volleyball partners Katie and Rachel, father/daughter Gary and Mallory, father/son Michael and Kevin, birth mom/daughter Andie and Jenna, and Ivy League a cappella singers Connor and Jonathan.
First to finally arrive at Stonehenge were Nat and Kat, moving up from fifth to front! They opened the clue, only to find a riddle: find the castle that is the opposite of nor’easter. That would be Eastnor Castle in Ledbury, Herefordshire:
Jill and Thomas found the clue box next, with Katie and Rachel hot on their heels. Brook and Clair were next, and while Ron and Tony got lost in England, Gary and Mallory and Connor and Jonathan snagged their next clue. Andie and Jenna were next with Chad and Stephanie right behind. Nick and Vicki, clearly fish out of water, and Michael and Kevin made their Stonehenge stops, leaving Ron and Tony dead last.
First to the castle are Jill and Thomas! At this juncture, teams “Storm the Castle” by climbing a ladder up the side of a castle wall, while ‘peasants’ throw dirty water down on them! Once they reach the top, they snag a flag and head down to the moat and cross it on a small saucer-shaped boat, then look for a knight for their next clue. Nat and Kat arrived to second place, Brook and Claire third!
At the moat, the top three teams fought from sinking with their boats. Meanwhile, Chad and Stephanie are 4th to the clue box, Katie and Rachel 5th, and Ron and Tony finally find Stonehenge!
Jill and Thomas are first to the Road Block: “Defeat the Warrior”! Slingshot a watermelon at a knight and win a prize! Or, more specifically, the next clue! Brook and Claire are 2nd, Nat and Kat 3rd!
Connor and Jonathan were the sixth team to arrive at Eastnor Castle, and actually caught up with Chad, Stephanie, Katie and Rachel at the moat! Back at the Road Block, Thomas took out the knight and he and Jill head to the pit stop: Eastnor Castle Meadow! Jill and Thomas are Team #1, and they get the coveted Express Pass!
Katie and Rachel become the 4th team to reach the Road Block, just as Nat and Kat finish and head out to meet up with Phil, becoming Team #2!
At 5:04 into the last clip, that is the Watermelon Smackdown Heard ‘Round the World, as Claire takes a slingshot melon to her own melon! Claire eventually exacted her own revenge (although the feeling in her face was slow to return) by finally taking out the knight!
Connor and Jonathan flew through to finish as Team #3, Brook and Claire as Team #4, and after finding their bearings Katie and Rachel followed as Team #5!
Chad and Stephanie finally took out the knight and are on their way to find Phil, while Gary and Mallory climb the castle wall. Andie and Jenna eventually reach the castle, then soon afterwards Nick and Vicki.
Gary and Mallory are 7th to the Road Block, 8th are Michael and Kevin. Nick and Vicki can’t find a boat. Ron and Tony are deep in last place, but finally find the castle! Gary and Mallory are 7th done with the Road Block, Michael and Kevin 8th.
With Chad and Stephanie scouring the countryside unable to find Phil, Gary and Mallory move up a notch to become Team #6, and Michael and Kevin Team #7!
Chad and Stephanie find Phil and are Team #8! Andie and Jenna are the 9th team done at the Road Block, just as Nick and Vicki arrive! At the pit stop, Andie and Jenna officially become Team #9, leaving one more spot open! With Ron and Tony stuck crossing the moat, Nick and Vicki, thinking London is a country, finish the Road Block and become Team #10…meaning that the team eliminated from the race is…
…best friends, 45-year-old Ron Kellum from Los Angeles, California, and 42-year-old Tony Stovall from Tuscon, Arizona!
